Condolences / Guest Book

  1. I worked with Hughie at The Banff in 2001/2002 until shortly before I left Australia. We lost touch as Hughie ,and I too , we were not people who’d go on the web and interact with the world, until Covid pushed us to join the crowd. We finally reunited on Facebook in 2020 after almost 2decades of silence.

Not only have we worked together, we also partied together on a regular basis. He was such a huge influence on me as a person and also as a chef. He totally revived my passion for cooking and because of this I am still cooking today.

There are so many things that I’d like to tell people about Hughie but, if I have to pick one, it’d have to be one of the services had at The Banff.
One night we got totally slammed. Hughie was quite angry and he shouted “Yuki!! Play Led Zeppelin!!”. I said “Which one!?” Hughie replied “Rock n Roll!!!!”. I remember turning the volume all the way up and also trying to cope with the loudness as I was right in front of the stereo.

I am so so grateful that I got to know Hughie well. I am proud to say that I was a close friend of his.
Such a wonderful soul that he made my time in Australia rather special.

I’d like to send my condolences to all the people he loved. I feel that we are all fortunate to have known him.

Love you Hughie. I hope that I’ll be able to see you again finally when my soul leaves my body.

Until then take care and keep rockin
    Your friend
    Yuki

    P.S.
Please play “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Rolling Stones if possible.
He told me once that it’s his preferred tune for his own funeral service.
I could not help to think to myself that moment, “What a cool guy“.

    Thank you

    • Hi Yuki, beautiful words for Hughie. We spoke not too long ago about you, and he mentioned that you two had reconnected. His eyes lit up as he spoke about you and your “adventures” together at Banff (and elsewhere). Such a cool guy that I too hope that I get to meet again some day. Take care, Mel (Sunset Bar, manager) x

      • Hi Mel thanks for the reply. Yes he was a very special friend that I always had a place for him in my heart even when we weren’t speaking to each other for 20years.
I remember you very well Mel. Living abroad can be tough at times but your kind nature always made my day(night). Take care! (Sorry admin for using this space as a message board. I’m sure Hughie is chuffed though)

  3. Deepest condolences to Hughie’s family and friends. He will be sadly missed. My vision is that he was greeted at the pearly gates by one Mr R Waddington with drinks in hand and plenty of cool records to spin.

  4. To Bernice, Geoff, Debbie & Annette,
Thinking of all the years where Hughie played such a big part in John’s & my lives. He was a huge musical influence on John, Freegs & me & in fact even now, when I get into the car with my brother in law, more often than not he will have ‘Hughie’ music playing (Blasters spring to mind). It was a warm friendship, there were wonderful dinners cooked by Hughie, Friday nights at Nello’s & Hughie greeting me with the vaguely undeserving (or possibly deserving) nickname – Mrs. Nasty. They were very special years & I feel grateful for the memories.
John & Sparky will be there to welcome him to …… wherever.
    Much love to you all,
    Dianne

  5. Sad to hear of your passing Hughie, a bit of a shock. Knew you for along time & many good times had by all, you were a true friend who shared part of my life, I thank you for that. Although you drifted away over these past years, not because of any falling out, just life I guess. Sometimes it takes us on different paths, but you were often in my thoughts as to how you were. Happy trails my dear friend and Rest in Peace.

  6. We met Jenny & Hughie through Kate’s sister Anne in the formative decade of the 1980’s. Hughie’s individualism shone like the brightest star in a far off galaxy. He didn’t give a rat’s what anyone thought of his flair, style, what he thought or how he expressed himself. Irrepressible. We shared what would no doubt now be considered a totally inappropriate sense of humor. He introduced us to a wide range of music. What a joy. Jenny & Hughie came to our wedding back in 1987 and were wonderfully dressed; Hughie in the smickest western style, prompting my very conservative father to question, “who’s the cowboy?”. Why, that’s Hughie! He left his mark on us and we remember him with great fondness and love. May you continue to shine Hughie. Adrian Brown & Kate Morton

  7. Hughie was a friend who did not judge, a great story teller. Name a singer, musician and Hughie had a story, a wealth of knowledge. Our dinners at Rob’s were legendary, and you will be truly missed, as you’ve gone too soon. X

    Dalvroy (Cindarella)
    • Thanks Dalvroy…the magic part of todays commemoration was the disparate part of Hughies life came together in a joint celebration.

  8. Dear Rollinson family, we have great and lasting fond memories of Hughie back in the
late 90’s when he was , for a short time living above Peter Jago’s shop.
His amazing knowledge of music was outstanding as we shared the same taste.
And he didn’t give a shit about accumulating masses of parking tickets on that fantastic car of his, that he left parked in East Prahan.
We always enjoyed popping in to visit when he worked at Route 66.
He looked well suited there, part of the decor. You might say.
What a truly wonderful person to have known and being a part of our lives.
    Never forgotten
    Rest in Peace Hughie.
