  28. Hearing the news made the world suddenly less bright. Irene made a mark on my adolescent years with her warmth and loving nature. I remember her reading in her front sitting room full of wonderous antiques she’d collected, she always seemed so cool and sure of herself and as a teenager I always hoped to be that way. I still think of that house when I smell incense. She made the best roast beef and relish sandwiches, and always welcomed me with open arms after school. Irene you will be so missed, it doesn’t seem right to say goodbye so soon. My heart breaks for you Pete, Claire and Andrew. May her presence from above give you comfort when you are down.

    Shaara

I cannot begin to imagine what her loss will mean to Peter and her family but I will keep you all in my prayers. I can only hope that those of us who benefited from Irene’s kindness will be able to reflect some of that virtue in her absence. Blessings in Mercy dear and gentle Irene.

  30. The few times I enjoyed Irene’s company I always thought I would love to see more of her!
Irene was great fun, though also you could have a serious conversation and feel safe to tell Irene anything. It appeared to me Irene loved life, her whole family and even her work too! Though Irene really did glow talking about her children and grandchild.
I can only imagine the loss for Irene’s family. My deepest condolences to Peter, Andrew, Claire, Jasper and Irene’s family on the loss of Irene. Wishing you comfort and peace in the days ahead. My heart goes out to you all.
    Your neighbour, Fiona.

  32. Irene was unfailingly generous, calm and professional. I could always see how she delighted in the moments of connection she had with others – staff and students, delighting also in the occasions that were out of the ordinary. 34. I am so sad that I missed the funeral today (silly colds!) I sat in the sun at the time you were meeting, and thought about Irene. She was such a special woman, who just lit up every room she entered. As a child and teenager, I looked up to her so much, and was always thrilled when she complimented me on something I did, or an outfit I wore (she was always so stylish!). Her enjoyment of life was contagious, and her love for friends and family so clear. She will be so sorely missed, and I am sending every ounce of my love to Pete, Claire and Andrew, and the rest of her family. Love Lauren, Jared, Charlie and Amelie xx

  35. Today we gathered to send Irene on her next journey.

I’ve read all the tributes, I’ve seen the affection with which she was regarded.

But I want to share my memories of this firecracker who made my life in Harkaway a time to remember.

Some people pass through your life and leave barely a ripple.
Irene was a tsunami who swept us along with her joy of life, her laughter, our adventures and our parties.

When I first met her in her severely tailored bank uniform I wondered how our relationship would work.
She asked me if Andrew and Claire could come back to my house after school until she finished work.

The first day she arrived to collect the kids I offered her a cup of tea. She didn’t exactly roll her eyes, but that first bottle of champagne quickly made an appearance. I think Irene and the kids went home about 11pm. And a fabulous friendship was forged.

Carolyn was another Harkaway mum who joined us, along with Irene’s friend Debra. Irene christened the 3 of them “Rob’s harem”!

It seemed there was always something to celebrate. We didn’t need an excuse.

Irene’s love of costume dictated many of our adventures. We dressed in period costume and went to Hanging Rock. Lauren laughs when she remembered that our picnic had to be of the era. Fortunately bubbles were allowed!
Irene and Debra wrote a letter from Miranda for the kids to discover. I still laugh when I think of us wandering round the Rock, waving our bottles in the air and calling for Miranda.

There is a famous photo (in our family at least) of Rob as Frankenfurter in his garter and stockings, and his gold high heels, with Irene and Deb draped adoringly over him.

Irene and I shared our secrets and our dreams, good times and bad, love and laughter and way too much drink!

Our kids played together and were happy to share our madness.

I think of the strands that weave together to make my memories and form my history. And Irene is that bright, sometimes warped, sometimes kinky, always strong thread that defined our life in Harkaway.

Irene wanted a man who was sensitive, could talk to her, could dance, could make her happy. I told her there was no such beast!
Little did I know he was there all along. Irene met my cousin Peter, and they connected as soul mates.

If I didn’t love her for anything else, I’d love her for making Peter so happy.

It’s not goodbye Irene. you’ll live on in our thoughts, or memories, or stories.

Peter, Andrew and Claire, our love goes to you.

    Rob and Julie Ayton
