  4. Reflections on times spent with my Uncle Jimmy;

    Even though my Uncle Jimmy hasn’t farmed for years, I still fondly associate him with that time of his life and my childhood.
    I recall staying with my cousins and waking very early hearing him walk along the verandah with the light of the torch in the dark well before sunrise to milk the cows. His trust in me, a city kid, to steer the tractor up and down the paddock while he forked out the silage, and watching him on that same tractor going back and forth over the new mound of silage to be ready for the next season.
    Squirting me with milk in the milking shed and teaching me how to milk a cow by hand that needed special attention, and letting me put food into the bales for the cows to eat whilst being milked.
    His urgency during tricky weather times of stopping the windmill from pumping water from the well at Nanas when I was was staying. Plus the warmth and the comfort of him popping into Nanas for a cup of tea by the combustion stove, sharing news of the farm activities, and upcoming requirements of the farm needing attention.
    Always kind and yet very firm, Jimmy the eldest of seven, you were a solid rock to your immediate and extended family and I know you will be missed.
    The last time I saw my Uncle Jimmy was at one of the Skye reunion lunches, where he was offering from the back of his truck delicious veggie and fruit produce grown in his extensive garden to both his relatives and long term friends, always having good thoughts for those in his sphere.
    Thanks for being my Uncle Jimmy.

  5. Jimmy was such a lovely Uncle.

    I have very fond memories of him with his big gumboots on and the care he always had for his cows. One of my Mum’s favourite stories was about Jimmy bringing a calf inside to warm up in front of a fire after it had been born during a storm. He then took it back out to its mum in the paddock.

    I’ll always remember Uncle Jimmy as kind, calm and very thoughtful.

    Much love to you Elaine, Susan, Julie, Graeme and all the family, from all of us here in SA, Yvonne (Sally), Anne, Ruth & David xxx
